# Printing Receipts With a Thermal Printer

CloudBridal supports printing payment receipts directly to thermal receipt printers (80mm paper). This feature allows for faster receipt printing and a more professional checkout experience.

If you use a Stripe card reader with a built-in printer, you can print receipts on the reader instead. See [Printing on a Stripe Card Reader](#printing-on-a-stripe-card-reader) below.

## Browser Requirements

Thermal receipt printing requires a browser which supports WebUSB, an experimental feature only available in the following browsers:

- **Google Chrome**
- **Microsoft Edge**

## Printer Compatibility

CloudBridal uses **ESC/POS commands**, the industry-standard protocol for thermal receipt printers. If you already have a compatible printer, you should be able to use it with CloudBridal. If not, we recommend the [Epson TM-T20III](https://amzn.to/46srcAd) as this is the printer we use for testing.

### Paper Requirements

- **Width**: 80mm thermal paper
- **Type**: Standard thermal receipt paper

| **Note**: While CloudBridal uses the standard ESC/POS protocol, some printer-specific features may vary. We recommend testing with your specific printer model to ensure full compatibility.

## Hardware Setup

### Windows Setup

Windows requires the Zadig driver tool to enable WebUSB communication with thermal printers:

1. **Download Zadig**: Visit [zadig.akeo.ie](https://zadig.akeo.ie/) and download the latest version
2. **Connect your thermal printer** via USB to your computer
3. **Run Zadig** as administrator
4. **Enable device listing**: Go to **Options** → **List All Devices**
5. **Select your printer** from the dropdown (e.g., "TM-T20III")
6. **Install WinUSB driver**: Click the **Replace Driver** button to install the WinUSB driver

### Mac Setup

Mac systems typically work with thermal printers out of the box without additional driver installation.

## CloudBridal Configuration

Before you can print thermal receipts, turn the feature on:

1. Go to [General settings](https://go.cloudbridal.com/settings/general)
2. In the **Devices & printing** card, turn on **Receipt printer**
3. Optionally set what the receipt shows, with a sample receipt beside it:
   - **Print the shop logo**
   - **Text below the receipt title**
   - **Text at the bottom**

## Printing a Receipt

Once your thermal printer is set up and the feature is enabled:

1. **Find the payment** in the customer's payments list
2. **Open the receipt**: open the payment's **⋯** menu and click **Receipt**
3. **Connect to your printer**: Click **Receipt printer**. If you also have a card reader that prints, click the arrow next to the button and choose **USB receipt printer**
4. **Select your device** from the browser's device selection dialog (e.g., "TM-T20III - Paired")
5. **Click Connect** to establish the connection
6. The receipt will automatically print to your thermal printer

The system will remember your printer selection for future print jobs during the same browser session, and each computer remembers which printer you used last.

## Printing on a Stripe Card Reader

If your card reader has a built-in printer (currently the **Verifone V660p**), CloudBridal can print receipts on it. This works from any browser, including on an iPad. You don't need a USB connection or any driver setup.

There is nothing to turn on. Once the reader is registered to your Stripe account, the **Card readers** row in **Devices & printing** in [General settings](https://go.cloudbridal.com/settings/general) names it as able to print receipts. The receipt logo and text settings there apply to card reader receipts too.

To print a receipt:

1. **Open the payment receipt**: in the customer's payments list, open the payment's **⋯** menu and click **Receipt**
2. Click **Receipt printer**. It prints on the printer you used last on this device. To use a different one, click the arrow next to the button and choose it from the list
3. CloudBridal confirms when the receipt has printed. If the reader can't print, you'll see the reason, such as the printer being out of paper

| **Note**: The reader can't print while it's taking a payment. Finish the payment on the reader first, then print the receipt. Card reader receipts use the reader's narrower paper roll, so long lines wrap onto a second line.

## Troubleshooting

**Printer not appearing in device list?**

- Ensure the printer is connected via USB and powered on
- On Windows, verify the WinUSB driver was installed correctly using Zadig
- Try refreshing the page and attempting the connection again

**Print job fails?**

- Verify you are using the latest version of **Chrome** or **Edge**
- Check that the printer has paper and is ready to print
- Verify the USB connection is secure
- Ensure your printer supports ESC/POS commands
- Restart your browser and try again

**Receipt printer button missing or greyed out?**

- Check that the reader is powered on and connected to the internet. The button is greyed out while its reader is offline, and hovering over it shows why
- Card readers only appear for models with a built-in printer, such as the Verifone V660p

**Partial printing or formatting issues?**

- Some older or specialized printers may have limited ESC/POS command support
- Try printing a test receipt to verify compatibility

| **Note**: Thermal receipt printing works alongside regular paper receipt generation. You can still print or email receipts as needed for record-keeping or customer preferences.
